Chris Burns, the latest Extended Family member, has supported the DC electronic music community for the past decade from all angles. He's taken on roles not only as a DJ but as a party promoter, label head, and producer.
Burns recalls early downloads from the legendary Napster, one of the earliest P2P file sharing services, for European radio mixes such as BBC's Essential Mixes that turned him on to house music. He eventually taught himself how to DJ and began throwing parties in DC in 2006, the first being called Disco City at Cosmo with Andrew Field Pickering (Max D, Future Times). This party, which lasted almost five years, expanded Chris' motivations to search for warehouses and art spaces such as TnT Clubhouse, 411 New York Ave, the City Bike's loft, etc. in order to promote underground dance music during an era where there were few welcoming solaces for those seeking techno and house.
Burns took the natural turn into production in late 2009. In 2012, along with Gavin Holland, Chris founded Mysteries of the Mind - an independent vinyl record label based in Washington DC. Chris has produced original and remixed releases for Quantize/Unquantize, Silence in Metropolis, Mysteries of the Mind, Ultra Nate/Blufire, Deep Sugar/410 Paradox, Nurvous, Plant, and dFM, among others. He's also helped engineer Mike Simonetti (Italians Do It Better, 2MR) over the years with both original and remixed works, including Simonetti's most recent Pale Blue LP. He's also worked with artists such as Denise Henderson, Jamie 326 and Marcus Webb.
You can catch Chris Burns spin at the Paradox for the 12th Anniversary of Deep Sugar on November 12th. Keep an eye out for upcoming productions as well, particularly U68, a cinematically themed project made in collaboration with Marcus Webb.
The Perry Place Studio mix may be a deviation from what you think you know about Chris Burns - this eclectic set is perfect for headphone listening, one that weaves between new and old, left and right.
Extended Family is a mix series curated by ZEM SU YUNG that features selectors from the Washington DC area and it's surrounding suburbs, otherwise known as the DMV. Digital downloads of every mix and accompanying tracklist will always be offered for free.
